Advanced Teaching Skills for Trauma-Related Health Conditions

Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Units:  30 Credit Hours

Prerequisite

Warriors At Ease Level 1 course Fundamentals of Teaching Yoga & Meditation in Military Communities

 

This course includes instruction in:

  • Adaptive Yoga for Traumatic Injury and Invisible Wounds
  • Yoga for Resiliency (Self-Regulation of Nervous System)
  • Self-Care techniques for Yoga Teachers/Therapists

You will have the opportunity to learn:

  • A deeper understanding of military culture and how it may affect a yoga student
  • How to use evidenced-based yoga/meditation/breath work as adjunct therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), amputations, spinal cord injuries, Military Sexual Trauma (MST) and combat-related stress
  • Trauma-sensitive teaching guidelines and precautions for specific populations
  • Yoga asana sequence protocols and modifications for the following military populations:
    • able-bodied service members with & without PTSD
    • older veterans with chronic physical illness and/or PTSD
    • veterans & service members affected by major physical illness, TBI, spinal cord injuries and/or amputations
    • veterans in wheelchairs
  • The neuroscience of PTSD and how the nervous system is impacted by war-related trauma and/or military sexual trauma
  • Breathing and meditation techniques that are most effective in reducing the symptoms of stress and trauma
  • Important Self-Care techniques for teachers dedicated to the health and healing of others

Additional Notes:

  • This course will be focused on supporting military and veteran populations, however the skills taught and practiced during this course are applicable to other populations where these health conditions exist.
