Michael Thomas has practiced meditation and yoga for more than twelve years, focusing on the development of mindfulness in both practices. Mr. Thomas graduated in June 2011 from the Yoga of Energy Flow 200 hour yoga teacher training presented by Daniel Orlansky and Liz Owen at The Arlington Center. The program included a core study of vinyassa flow yoga, with explorations of yoga asana, alignments, pranayama, assisting skills, anatomy, yogic lifestyle and philosophy, and teaching techniques. He has been training, practice teaching and teaching since September 2010. In his practice and teaching, Mr. Thomas combines breath- and mudra-oriented vinyassa flow with Iyengar-based attention to proper alignment in postures integrated wherever possible with practices what promote mindfulness and attunement to body sensations.
Mr. Thomas received certification from the Warriors at Ease program to teach yoga and meditation to the military community in December 2014. This certification required training and mentor-supervised practice focused on the particular teaching methods most useful for students who may have suffered complex physical or emotional military-related trauma, in order to be of assistance to the students’ therapeutic remediation. Mr. Thomas has been teaching yoga to members of the military in the Boston area for two years.
Mr. Thomas is also currently engaged in the Trauma-Sensitive Yoga teacher certification program of the world-renowned Justice Resource Institute’s Trauma Center in Brookline, MA. He expects to be certified as a Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive yoga teacher in April 2015. This certification will qualify him to teach trauma sensitive yoga as an adjunctive therapy to students suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (“PTSD”) and complex PTSD (victims of sustained or chronic trauma). He is helping to organize and teach trauma sensitive yoga to survivors of the Boston Marathon bombings at the Resiliency Center in Boston.
Mr. Thomas has participated in workshops and intensives with Jack Kornfield (Mindfulness Meditation), Sharon Salzberg (Loving-kindness), Sarah Powers (Yin Yoga), Jonathan Foust (Energy Intensive), and in meditation and yoga retreats with Chip Hartranft, John Calabria, Larry Rosenberg and Matthew Daniel. He is presently teaching yoga to veterans and their families at the Edwards Church in Framingham, MA and at the There and Back Again veterans yoga program in Charlestown, MA. He is also teaching at the Trauma Center’s men’s yoga program. He has taught classes and substituted at the Lumina Center at Longfellow Fitness Club in Wayland, MA, the Mystic Fitness Club in Framingham, MA and the Arlington Center in Arlington, MA.
Mr. Thomas also has practiced environmental and land use law for more than thirty years, specializing in the allocation of cleanup responsibilities at complex uncontrolled hazardous waste sites under the federal Superfund program.
