Silver Spring, Maryland – Today, Warriors at Ease is proud to add Army Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Benefsheh Verell to serve on its Board of Directors. Lt. Col. Verell joined the Board of Directors on January 1, 2018.
Lt. Col. Verell has 20 years of experience with the Army as a Military Police (MP) Officer and Information Operations (IO) Officer. She also attended graduate school at the University of Maryland, College Park, and received her Masters of Science in Physical Geography. She taught Physical Geography and Land Use Planning at West Point during her time with the Army.
It was after her return from her deployment in Bosnia in 1999 that she tried yoga for the first time, but it wasn’t until after the birth of her second child that she began to take her practice more seriously. She earned her 200-hour yoga teacher certification in June 2012. Once certified, she shared yoga with her fellow military members and their families regularly for the rest of her career with the Army.
As a retiree, Lt. Col. Verell remains passionate about yoga and service members and her long-term goal is to see yoga and meditation as part of a regular resiliency program that starts in basic training and continues throughout a service member’s career. Lt. Col. Verell serves the military community as a spouse and retiree through teaching and advocating for meditation and yoga, educating senior leaders about the benefits of mindfulness, meditation, and yoga, and mentoring service members and spouses.
Lt. Col. Verell’s views on integrative health and experience with teaching yoga and mindfulness fit perfectly with Warriors at Ease’s desire to facilitate the health and wellness of warriors and their families. Warriors at Ease is honored to call upon Lt. Col. Verell as a key advisor.
“On behalf of the entire Warriors at Ease team, we warmly welcome Lt. Col. Verell to our Board of Directors, and look forward to her perspective on how we can effectively share mind-body practices with service members, veterans and their families,” said Warriors at Ease’s Executive Director, Susan Alden. “Her experience in the military and her desire to integrate yoga and meditation in military resiliency programs will bring benefits to Warriors at Ease as an organization and to the military and veteran-connected population we serve.”
Warriors at Ease works to increase awareness about the power of yoga and meditation, and to educate a network of professionals qualified to share evidence-based practices through programs that support the health and healing of service members, veterans and their families.
Benefsheh Verell is a member of the Army of the United States Army (AUS) Retired List. Use of her military rank and job titles does not imply endorsement by the Department of the Army or the Department of Defense.
