Why I am not setting a New Year’s Resolution

It’s that time of year…

Whether 2021 flew by for you or seemed to move at a standstill, we’re all in the same place now. We are nearing the end of the year and many of us are already looking ahead to 2022.

Before you know it, we’ll be inundated with all of the get rich quick, lose weight fast, new year new you noise that is often nothing more than a distraction for most of us. 

For me personally, New Year’s Resolutions are not my thing. 

But I will be setting intentions, just like I do every day. I don’t want to ever wait until next Monday, the 1st of the month, or the 1st of the year to take action to make a change. 

If I know that something isn’t working, if I’m not feeling good… or even if I feel amazing and have a new idea for something in my life or business…

Why wait?  

I don’t know how long I’ll have on this Earth. I want to make sure that every day I’m making choices and taking action to create my happiest, healthiest, most aligned and most intentional life. 

So… I will officially NOT be making a New Year’s Resolution. Not that there’s anything wrong with them… that’s just not how I show up as my best self throughout the year. 

What I AM doing is making time to reflect on the past year and reflecting on what’s important to me in 2022, who I need to be and the intentional actions I need to take to live my best life. 

And then reflecting on these things every single day to make sure that I am living in alignment with what’s most important. 

For you, if you are excited about the idea of setting a new tone for the new year, here are some questions I’d invite you to consider as you’re thinking ahead to 2022:

  • What went well for me this year? What did not go well? 
  • What brought me the most joy this year and how can I create more of that next year?
  • What do you envision for yourself next year?
  • How do you want to feel next year?
  • What type of impact do you want to make in your family, your work, your community, the world next year and how does that connect to your vision?  
  • What steps do you have to take to bring that vision and that impact to life?
  • How will you actually do that?
  • Why is it important to make shifts in 2022?
  • What happens if you keep it?
  • What happens if you break it? 

I think with most commitments we make to ourselves… whether that’s in the form of an annual resolution or a daily commitment to our self care… tying it back to our why, our vision for our life, our purpose in the world… is our best chance of keeping it. 

That and making sure that we have the support we need in keeping our promises to ourselves.

So as you’re reflecting on this year and planning ahead for next, I’d invite you to also think about what support you have already available to you… and what support you might need to bring your vision for yourself to life. 

Tie your intentions back to your vision for your best life and ensure that you have a support system to help you keep it and I’m confident that 2022 will be the year that you keep it.
